Pronunciation Practice
Review the Short I Sound
In this lesson, there are many words with the short i sound. You learned this sound in lesson 7. Let’s practice the words from this lesson that have the short i sound.
Listen and repeat:
give, animals, it, will, fish, living, himself, women, his, children, fill, bring, in, given, everything, including, evening, morning, sixth
Note: The plural word women has irregular pronunciation. Both o and e make the short i sound.

Vowels are Important!
I hope you are not having too much trouble with short vowel sounds. They are a little more difficult to learn than the long vowel sounds. Please take time to learn and practice the sounds correctly! This will help native English speakers understand you when you speak.
Learn the Short "O" Sound
The short o sound is common between two consonants. You see it in the words dog, hot, and job. The letter a makes the same sound in the words father and raw. In American English, this sound can also be spelled with the letters aw.
To make the short o sound, make an “O” shape with your lips. Keep your lips relaxed. Your mouth should be open. Your tongue should be relaxed on the bottom of your mouth. Now use your vocal cords to make a small, brief sound. That is the sound of short o.
Watch this video to help you produce the short o sound.
Practice with Short "O"
Let’s practice. There are only two words with short o in our text today – God and lot. I have added extra words to help you practice.
O makes many sounds. You will see many words from today’s verses with the letter o, but only two of these words use the short o sound. We will learn the other sounds of o in another lesson.
If you don’t know what these words mean, you can use a dictionary of your language and English or find them in an English dictionary. I like to use the Oxford Learner’s Dictionary.
Listen and repeat:
God, lot, hot, job, dog, not, father, raw, mom, shop
Practice the Short “O” Sound
Speaking Exercise
Practice speaking a sentence from this Bible lesson.
Instructions:
- Listen to the sentence one time. Only listen, do not talk.
- Play it again. This time, stop often. Repeat the words you hear.
- Practice many times.
Do your best to say the words the way the speaker says them. If you are learning American English, imitate her pronunciation the best you can.
Don’t worry if you have an accent. The most important thing is that people can understand you. Practice the vowel sounds, and learn the stress patterns in each word.
Here we go! Do your best.
