Pronunciation Practice

Review the Short U Sound

In this lesson, there are four words with the short (open) u sound. You learned this sound in lesson 9. Let’s practice the words from this lesson that have the short (open) u sound. It is very common to spell the short u sound with the letters u or o.

Listen and repeat:
of, us, under, wonderful

Review Short Vowel Sounds

Let’s review the short vowel sounds of a, e, i, o, and u.

These words are the same except for the vowel sound. You need to use the right sound to say the word you want to say, so people will understand you. Listen to the words and repeat. Say each word slowly, and notice the shape of your mouth.

If you don’t know what these words mean, you can use a dictionary of your language and English or find them in an English dictionary. I like to use the Oxford Learner’s Dictionary.

Speaking Exercise

Practice speaking a sentence from this Bible lesson.

Instructions:

  1. Listen to the sentence one time. Only listen, do not talk.
  2. Play it again. This time, stop often. Repeat the words you hear.
  3. Practice many times.

Do your best to say the words the way the speaker says them. If you are learning American English, imitate her pronunciation the best you can.

Don’t worry if you have an accent. Everyone on earth who speaks English has an accent! The most important thing is that people can understand you. Practice the vowel sounds, and learn the stress patterns in each word.

Here we go! Do your best.
