Beginning with English Verb Tenses

Some people will tell you that English verb tenses are complicated. Well, I’m here to tell you that they don’t have to be! Let’s take a closer look.

3 Tenses (Times)

The word “tense” just means time. In English, we have three tenses, or “times,” for our verbs – Present, Past, and Future. That’s it!

Each of these tenses has four forms:

Simple
Continuous
Perfect
Perfect Continuous

For example, the Present tense will have four forms: Simple Present, Present Continuous, Present Perfect, and Present Perfect Continuous.

Speaking English

The good news is that when you are speaking English, you can usually say everything you need to say with the simple and the continuous forms! The present perfect is also a form you will use a lot. The other forms are not used much by native speakers in everyday conversation. You will see them in writing, though, so it’s important to learn when to use them and how they work.

English does have conditional and subjunctive “moods,” and we will look at those as well. Conditionals will be important for you to learn, but the English subjunctive is not used much by native speakers.
